Recipe for Hope luncheon at the Broadmoor raises $75,000 to fight hunger

Even in a community as supportive and loving as ours families go hungry. It's Care and Share's mission to help provide food to those families and yesterday Care and Share held its annual Recipe For Hope Luncheon at the Broadmoor's International Center. Nearly 600 community leaders,
business people and concerned citizens attended the luncheon featuring a dish prepared by Chef Frazier that included chicken, rice krispies, apricot and spinach. These foods are commonly distributed by Care and Share to needy families. Together, the luncheon attendees raised $75,000 to be used to purchase food that Care and Share will distribute. Last year Care and Share
distributed 4,000 Send Hunger Packing backpacks via 16 elementary schools to needy students and their families. These backpacks, filled with enough food for a family of four, came home with kids on the weekends. Unfortunately, Care and Share was able to provide only half of the needed
packs. To give you an idea of the need, there are just as many schools on the waiting list for the Send Hunger Packing program as there are schools in it, according to Care and Share's Community Relations Director Shannon Coker. What's so inspiring and incredible is that we have Care and Share at all! Sister Dominique helped found the program nearly 35 years ago
right here in Colorado Springs and she attended yesterday's luncheon at the Broadmoor. Brandy Merriam, a financial planner with Ameriprise Financial, also shared her story of growing up hungry as a child and the Colorado Springs Conservatory performed some amazing music.
Every year I try to donate my services to worthy causes including Care and Share. It is a truly honorable endevour. No child should ever go hungry. Make a donation to Care and Share right here, right now. — Sean
