Colorado Springs Newborn Photographs : Baby Gideon
Monday, March 26, 2012
I revisited some old friends last weekend and photographed their new baby boy Gideon. Gideon was born March 10, 2012 and was 9 lbs, 13 oz when he arrived. His parents, Rachelle and Drew, were postively glowing with joy, excitement and pride. (Baby Gideon is
the biggest of all of his cousins on Rachelle's side of the family:) I've known Rachelle and Drew since well before their wedding day at The Pinery April 9, 2010. When I heard of Gideon's arrival I thought how wonderful it was for him to arrive just in time for Rachelle and
Drew's two-year anniversary. Gideon was asleep when I stopped in and so I was able to quietly photograph him without much fuss at all. I also brought a macro lens - a lens uniquely suited for taking pictures of small things - so that I could get close-up pictures of fingers and toes. Gideon
woke up happy and perhaps a touch hungry halfway through the session. He was just as curious about me as I was interested in him! Congratulations to Rachelle and Drew the arrival of your beautiful son. It was so wonderful to meet him! — Sean

I spent this morning with Jacob. He turned two at the beginnig of March. A big boy and he's not afraid to tell you. He's also just really adorable. Here's a picture I took before our walk this morning. He followed me down the stairs as I was grabbing my camera to bring along. Three things really make this picture work for me. First, the natural light coming in from a window gives it a luminous quality. Jacob also has a great expression and a wonderful hat on (it's his sister's) picked just for our walk together. And finally? His gaze is eye level with the camera. So many pictures of children miss the mark because they are photographed from eye level of the adult and NOT the child. Stairs are great for this! — Sean
I have photographed the Sherman and Goldenberg families since Jill and Josh's wedding day at the Broadmoor in 2006. Jill recently asked me to come to Denver and do a family sitting at her home. Everyone was coming for the weekend to attend a Jewish naming ceremony for Jill's daughter Reese, newly born in December. I always like to arrive early just to catch a moment or two where I can photograph the children being themselves. This picture of the boys watching over the
sleeping baby is just priceless. When setting up posed pictures inside a home, simpler is better. For this sitting I picked a geometrically pleasing background that wasn't too specific. I lit the pictures using two off camera speedlites with umbrellas. Once I have a set up that I like then it's about keeping the posed pictures fun, light and fast paced. When it comes to pictures like these, nothing is more important than blending generations. Thank you Jill and Josh for inviting me to your home. Reese is beautiful and your families are such a joy to spend the afternoon with. Congratulations! — Sean
