Our Whitefield, New Hampshire Wedding

Whitefield, New Hampshire Wedding

Cathy and I were married in an apple orchard at Cathy’s childhood home in Whitefield, New Hampshire. Our main goal throughout was to keep things simple and make our wedding day enjoyable for our guests as well as ourselves. Many of our guests traveled to our wedding, some as far away as Germany. It was important to us that our family and friends not only felt welcome but that they truly got to enjoy this scenic location and the fall colors. It’s just a few miles away from Mount Washington. We decided to see each other before our wedding and have portraits of the two of us as well as family photographs made before most of our guests arrived. We told our photographer Mark Adams that we wanted to truly “stay in the moment” during our wedding day. By commissioning Mark – a close friend who practices his craft much the way we do – to photograph our wedding day in a documentary style and by doing the majority of “posed” pictures beforehand, our day was uninterrupted and filled with both emotion and great moments.

Inspiration for our wedding came from a poem by Henry David Thoreau. It’s also the inspiration behind our motto. Entitled “On Friendship” it reads:

Two sturdy oaks I mean, which side by side,

Withstand the winter’s storm,
And spite of wind and tide,
Grow up the meadow’s pride,
For both are strong

Above they barely touch, but undermined
Down to their deepest source,
Admiring you shall find
Their roots are intertwined
Insep’rably.

Here are some of our own personal touches to our wedding day:

• Cathy invited everyone to help bake pies at the local church on the day of the rehearsal
• Cathy ordered boutonnieres for our families, but she picked her bouquet of wildflowers just a few minutes before the ceremony started

• When guests arrived we welcomed them with cider and spiced wine
• Our ceremony site was unadorned with only a few rows of hay bales (for seating) to mark the ceremony site

• We recruited most of the musicians in our family to sing and to perform (including my cousin the bagpiper)
• Ceremony readings included Dr. Seuss and Henry David Thoreau
• Instead of a cake cutting, we served pie to our guests in matching bride and groom aprons
• We provided Polaroid cameras for our guests to use and displayed the photographs on a fence near our reception tent.

• We had an extended cocktail hour (closer to 2 hours) before dinner and offered our guests a number of lawn games to enjoy including croquet, a pitching area for golfers and horseshoes
• A dear friend who brews beer manned a beer tent for the reception
• Our caterer served dinner family-style, with food presented in the center of each table
• We had a local group of dancers give contra dancing lessons after dinner
• A bonfire was starteda at the conclusion of dinner and we danced and played music into the evening
• On the morning after a pancake breakfast was hosted by us, an appropriate way to say thank you.

If you’re evaluating photographers for your wedding day, here’s a great tip. Ask to see their wedding photographs. Of course, they have to be married. We love to show our wedding album to couples who are interested in commissioning us. We get to find our what’s important to them photographically and they get to learn a little bit more about us. — Sean
